Drybrush and Scumble

Drybrush is a painting technique in which you paint with a brush...that is dry. Drybrush technique can be used with both oil-based and water-based paints. The brush is first squeezed dry and is then loaded with a thick paint. It is then painted on dry support. The result is a scratchy appearance in which the strokes are clearly visible. In scumbling a thin glaze of opaque paint i applied over a surface and specks of paint beneath it show through. Some artists who have used these techniques include: Paul Klee, Rembrandt and El Greco.
